2025 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of William Turner, the great master of British Romanticism. The 3rd Venice International Watercolour Festival, themed around this milestone, officially opened on October 11 at the Palazzo dei Trecento in Treviso, Italy, running through October 25.The Palazzo dei Trecento is a medieval landmark at the heart of Treviso's city centre. Once the seat of the local council, it remains one of the most iconic cultural exhibition venues in the Veneto region — its deep historical character a natural complement to the classical spirit of watercolour art.
The exhibition brought together shortlisted watercolour works from artists around the world, co-organised by the Independent Turner Society (UK), the Italian Association for Cultural and Artistic Exchange, and Shengxinyu Art (China), under the supervision of the Municipality of Treviso. Its significance goes beyond a tribute to Turner — the painter whom John Ruskin called "the father of modern art," who visited Venice three times and found there his ultimate expression of light and colour. More broadly, the exhibition returns watercolour as an ancient medium to the centre of the international art stage, offering artists from across the globe a shared space for dialogue that transcends culture and language.
